Block Party a Huge Success!
There is a new world record and St. Lucie County has bragging rights for the second year in a row. Partnering with the St. Lucie County Education Foundation in an effort to recognize the hard work of St. Lucie County students throughout 2008-2009, the Van Duzer Foundaiton and Big Apple Pizza Fort Pierce smashed the world’s record a second time – in a BIG way. Saturday, May 16th, the St. Lucie County Education Foundation and the Van Duzer Foundation hosted the world’s biggest Pizza Block Party – a whole block of pizzas – 1,777.10 feet in all. The event was fun for all, brought a community together and was free to members of the community.
The party took place at Big Apple Pizza and Pasta in Fort Pierce at 2311 South 35th Street (right across from IRSC), where students, teachers, principals, parents, friends and neighbors helped line up 1,801 pizzas, enough to break the Guinness World’s Record (again!) and celebrate community and the end of another successful school year in St. Lucie County. The event also served as a fundraiser for the St. Lucie County Education Foundation and the Van Duzer Foundation, which also helps local families during times of personal crisis and tragedy.
A helicopter flew overhead to take photos and video of a pizza line that stretched all the way around a city block to help document the new world’s record. Despite a brisk breeze, members of the community worked together to form a line of pizzas that stretched from 35th Street to Arnold Drive, to 36th Street, down Virginia Avenue and back to South 35th Street again. More than 1,200 individuals participated in the day, including St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara, Fort Pierce Mayor Bob Benton, County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky, Representative Adam Fetterman, Veteran’s Services Director Paul Hiott, former St. Lucie County Fire Chief Jay Sizemore, State former State Representative Joe Negron and CORE Community Relations Director Jane Rowley.
